Dear PTA Advocates:
Attached is a current bill
list. We REALLY need you to contact your legislators, in both
the Illinois House and Senate, encouraging them to work for an
income tax increase to have the monies necessary to keep Illinois
from dissolving in to a place where education and other needs of our
children are simply not met.
We need to support all school
districts, and we need to especially help school districts in
low property tax wealth areas to have sufficient revenue to simply
provide an adequate educational program - forget the
extras! AND school districts must receive their
23rd and 24th state aid payments in THIS fiscal year!
We need to be able to fund
health services and to continue to improve the juvenile justice
system and then there are those pension funds, and capital
needs.
Remind your representative in
the House we need to raise the age of being considered an adult to
the 18th birthday from the present 17th birthday. S 2275, which has
passed the Senate and is in the House, would do so -
though only for misdemeanors - and so cost very little money.
A yes vote is important to PTA - and all kids!
Your legislators are home until
next
Tuesday (House) or Wednesday (Senate) so call them now - and
you can call them again in Springfield. Remember all the
contact information you need is on the Illinois PTA website - www.illinoispta.org.
As always, say, "I'm
PTA!"
And feel free to email with any
questions/concerns.
Gretchen L. McDowell, Consultant, State Legislation,
Illinois PTA
Funding Our Public
Schools "The Illinois PTA will
continue to seek legislative action that is designed to provide
long-term, sustainable funding which fosters equity, respects local
control, encourages improved teaching and learning, provides
property tax relief, and addresses both the structural deficit and
under-funded pension
issues." “In response to
current legislative proposals, we continue our strong support of
HB/SB 750, which we support based on the statement above, and as
directed by our membership at the 2005 Annual PTA Convention.
We will carefully examine any other proposals once they have been
introduced into legislation, and based on our Legislation Platform
and principles, and careful consideration of respected concerned
experts, address those proposals at the appropriate
time.”
