PTA Resolution becomes Law
Springfield, IL, October 17, 2007: Public Act 95-0671 comes
to fruition, with the result that a Resolution of the Illinois PTA,
to require an eye examination of every child in a public, private or
parochial school before entering kindergarten has become
law.
The Illinois PTA resolution reads in part, ”That the Illinois
PTA, through its constituent organizations, support legislation to
require a comprehensive eye and vision examination, by an
optometrist or ophthalmologist, for all children entering
kindergarten (or first grade) as a necessary prerequisite to
academic learning.”
After
the adoption of the Resolution, the Illinois PTA joined forces with
the Vision First and others to have SB 641 introduced by Senator
Deanne Demuzio. Senate Bill 641 was filed February 28, 2007 by
Senator Deanna Demuzio. The bill was passed by the Senate and
Representative Jil Tracy sponsored the bill in the House, where it
was passed on May 31st .
The
Illinois PTA urges all parents to have their children’s eyes
examined early so that any eye problems can be diagnosed and
treated, enabling the children to do their best in school.
