Illinois PTA Resolution becomes Law

 

Springfield, IL, October 17, 2007: Public Act 95-0671 comes to fruition, with the result that a Resolution of the Illinois PTA, to require an eye examination of every child in a public, private or parochial school before entering kindergarten has become law.

 

The Illinois PTA resolution reads in part, ”That the Illinois PTA, through its constituent organizations, support legislation to require a comprehensive eye and vision examination, by an optometrist or ophthalmologist, for all children entering kindergarten (or first grade) as a necessary prerequisite to academic learning.” 

 

After the adoption of the Resolution, the Illinois PTA joined forces with the Vision First and others to have SB 641 introduced by Senator Deanne Demuzio.  Senate Bill 641 was filed February 28, 2007 by Senator Deanna Demuzio. The bill was passed by the Senate and Representative Jil Tracy sponsored the bill in the House, where it was passed on May 31st  .   

 

The Illinois PTA urges all parents to have their children’s eyes examined early so that any eye problems can be diagnosed and treated, enabling the children to do their best in school.
